English is everywhere.
In this globalized world, English has become an
international language. English can be found in some form or another in other
parts of the world. English may not be the official language in all the
countries, but many countries are teaching English as a second language. It is the default language of Google and
Internet Explorer, something that we are exposed to everyday. The Internet is
something that we use very often in our lives. It allows us to stay connected
to the world. Moreover, the articles that we read online to get information are
mostly in English. Without learning English, we will not be able to understand
what we want to know from the web. English is important as it allows us to stay
connected in this increasingly globalized world, to learn from the internet about
what is going on around the world. English allows us to communicate with
foreigners when we are overseas. This is important to me as I am one who likes
to travel a lot.
In Singapore, English is both the medium of communication
and instruction in Singapore. English has become a part of our daily life. We
will not be able to communicate properly with the people around us properly if
we cannot speak English, regardless of it being talking or texting. The
importance of English has been emphasized to us since young. The various
subjects that we learn in school are all in English and it has always been a
requirement to do well for English language since primary school.
Career wise, English is important as the basic requirement to
get a job is to have the ability to write and speak good English. Moreover,
there will be collaboration with overseas companies and English will act as a
bridge of communication. Without English, one will not be able to do well in
his or her career.
English is everywhere. One will only lose out if he or she fails to realize the importance of English.

I definitely agree with you on the importance of English in Singapore and the other parts of the world! It is the basic language of communication in Singapore. However, you will be surprised to know that there are actually some of them who still do not realise the importance of English language. On the other hand Shaun, I wish I got to know more about your personal experience with English language such as your struggle or perhaps something you enjoyed about English classes. Nonetheless, I did not spot any grammar mistakes or any odd sentence structures!
ReplyDeleteHi shaun! I like how you organised your essay as you started with a general overview of the importance of English in the world and narrowed it down to the local context and eventually to the aspect of career, whereby everyone can relate to. Language wise, there is no problem but I think you need to emphasize more on your own experience. I also understand that perhaps you do not have enough word count to elaborate on so not to worry and keep up the good work! (:
ReplyDeleteThank you, Shaun, for embracing the chance to do something more unique with this writing assignment. I like the way you move your discussion from a global level, to the Singapore context, and then to a more personal one, focusing on the career advantages to having English. You do so in a very clear, concise and grammatically correct manner. This is a very fine short essay. I looking forward to reading more from you this term.
